Sunderland sack manager Steve Bruce

Steve Bruce became the first English Premier League manager to be sacked this season when Sunderland fired the former Manchester United player.

"Sadly results this season have simply not been good enough and I feel the time is right to make a change," chairman Ellis Short said on the (club's website).

Bruce, 50, joined Sunderland from Wigan Athletic in 2009 and guided Sunderland to 13th in his first season in charge and improved on that with a 10th-placed finish in 2010-11.

But this season has not started well and Bruce leaves with the north-east club languishing two points above the drop zone.

Assistant manager Eric Black would take charge of the first team duties as the club searches for a new manager. Former Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill and ex-Fulham manager Mark Hughes are the early favourites with bookmakers.

Seedings announced for Euro2012 final draw

The seedings have been announced for the group draw for the Euro2012 Finals, with World Cup finalists Spain and Netherlands joining host nations Poland and Ukraine in the top pot.

This dichotomy has the potential to create some mis-matched groups of varying strength, and all nations will be hoping for the luck of the draw in avoiding a "group of death".

Seedings for Euro 2012 Final Draw
Pot 1: Spain, Netherlands, Poland*, Ukraine*.
Pot 2: Germany, Italy, England, Russia.
Pot 3: Croatia, Greece, Portugal, Sweden.
Pot 4: Denmark, France, Czech Republic, Republic of Ireland

Spain and Germany were the only two teams to qualify for the finals with 100% records in their qualifying group with eight and 10 straight victories respectively, The Netherlands also qualified with ease after winning nine out of their 10 qualifying matches, but Portugal, who made the last eight in 2004 and were beaten finalists in 2000, qualfied via the play-offs.

Forty per cent of the seeding for the finals is decided by the teams' respective qualifying record, with the same amount based on their performance in World Cup 2010 qualifying and finals and the remainder on their performance in Euro 2008.

The draw will be made on December 2nd in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev.

Are the Green Bay Packers SuperBowl bound?

Heading into tonights game with the Minnesota Vikings the Green Bay Packers are 8-0 and making a good job of defending the Super Bowl Champions title that they won last season?

But how likely is that the Packers will repeat as Champions?

I heard an interesting statistic on ESPN's Monday Night countdown earlier .. that might shed some light on their chances.

There have been 17 teams that have started 8-0 or better since the NFL merged to form the NFC and AFC conferences and play for the Super Bowl. Of those 17 teams - 12 have made it to the Super Bowl, and 8 of them have won it.

Those numbers - 12 of 17 reach the Super Bowl and 8 eventually win the trophy - are probably the most accurate and quantifiable guide that we have.
