Tomas Rosicky Retires ... "I'm a Gunner forever"

Arsenal favourite Tomas Rosicky has retired today at 37 years of age saying that he could no longer deal with the physical rigours of professional football, and had called time on his long playing career.

The former Czech international spent ten years playing for The Arsenal in North London, and he took time to say thanks to fans by calling the club and doing an interview.

“For one last time, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Arsenal Football Club,” he said.

Rosicky continued : “For me, it’s a fantastic club and it was always an honour for me to play for Arsenal."

Congratulations on a great career Tomas - always a Gooner !

NFL Odds: Bears-Packers on Thursday Night Football

The NFL’s longest-standing rivalry continues Thursday night (8:25 PM ET, CBS) when the Chicago Bears meet the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.

These two teams have played each other 194 times since 1921, and after all that time it’s all even at 94-94-6 heading into their latest showdown. However, the Packers have won six of the last seven games, and they’re 7.5-point favorites at press time with a total of 45.5.

Bet on NFL football at Bovada and get a 100% bonus.

Green Bay (2-1 SU, 1-2 ATS) is once again one of the better teams in the NFL, and arguably the most popular, but the Packers haven’t covered the spread in the last two games, so are the bookies putting a large -7.5 spread to collect Cheesehead fan money?

The Packers needed overtime to beat the Cincinnati Bengals 27-24 last Sunday as 8-point home favourites. The Packers lost yet another offensive lineman in that game: RT Kyle Murphy (foot) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.

The Bears (1-2 SU, 2-1 ATS) got their first win of 2017 last Sunday in another overtime thriller, beating the Pittsburgh Steelers 23-17 as 7.5-point home underdogs.

But Chicago are also growing perilously thin on the offensive line; center Hroniss Grasu (hand) left the game early and remains iffy for Thursday, as does RG Josh Sitton (ribs). Safety Quintin Demps is out indefinitely as well with a broken forearm.

As for a pick - I've got the Green Bay Packers winning a close one with Lambeau Field and the Packer fans being the deciding factor.

Green Bay to win 21-17.

NFL Odds : New England Patriots Still Super Bowl Favorites

The New England Patriots  may have lost their top wide receiver, but they haven’t moved on the Super Bowl LII futures market.

The Pats are still the +325 favourites at press time despite losing WR Julian Edelman (98 catches, 1106 yards last year) to a torn ACL. Edelman will miss the entire 2017 season, which starts September 7 when the Patriots host the Kansas City Chiefs at 8:30 PM ET.

Without Edelman’s services, the defending Super Bowl champions will be relying on newcomer Brandin Cooks (78 catches, 1173 yards for New Orleans) to be their top wideout. Cooks came over from the Saints in March; he was sixth among NFL receivers last year at 10.0 yards per target. Chris Hogan (38 catches, 680 yards) should also see some more playing time with Edelman on injured reserve.
Who can challenge the Pats?
The Green Bay Packers (+800) and Oakland Raiders (+1000) are the top contenders to New England’s crown, according to the NFL futures lines. The Atlanta Falcons, who nearly beat the Patriots at Super Bowl LI, are available at +1200. The Falcons have almost all their key players coming back for 2017, and they’ll be playing in the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium this year.

Israel bans Binary Options firms from selling overseas.

There is hope on the horizon for those of us who are constantly called up by phone-touts pretending to be financial experts and pushing Binary Options - as they have had the legislative rug pulled out from under them.

Israel's Securities Authoriy (ISA) has drawn up a law banning "any type of trading forum that sells to overseas clients - even if they do not offer binary options - without receiving a license from the country where clients reside." Note that Israel already banned the domestic sale of binary options last year, the first country to do so.

The ISA consider that "Beyond the severe economic harm to citizens around the world, marketers of binary options are increasingly causing reputational damage and inflaming anti-Semitism towards Jews and Israelis" and I've got to say that after personally receiving over 100 calls ... they are not far wrong.

Breaking the law will be punishable by up to two years in prison and if money laundering is involved, punishment could reach 10 years in prison.

The bill now heads to parliament, where it is expected to be fast-tracked, giving it priority over other bills, an ISA spokeswoman said.

The owner of an Israeli binary options firm was arrested on suspicion of fraud and extortion last month after an investor abroad reported losses of more than $500,000 to the online company, the first arrest since authorities announced a crackdown.

Champions League Final Could Be An Extra-Time Affair

The two best football clubs on the planet will meet this Saturday at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff in the 2017 UEFA Champions League Final.

The defending champions Real Madrid will face Juventus in a rematch of the 1998 final, which Real Madrid won 1-0 thanks to a 66th minute goal from Predrag Milatovic.
(See Video highlights on YouTube here)

Real Madrid are slim favorites in this match-up, priced at 2.50 (+150) to win with Juventus at 2.75 (+175) and the draw at 90 minutes very much a betting option at 3.05 (+205).

Real Madrid are considered by many to currently be the best club in the  world after winning the Champions League in 2014 and 2016, and they come into Saturday’s final as Spain's La Liga champions, led by the incomparable four-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristian Ronaldo.

But, Juventus have legendary Gianluigi Buffon in goal, and won Italy's Serie A for the sixth straight year. Juve have a mean defence having conceded just one goal in their last seven matches combined.

Scoring could be even more difficult for Real Madrid if reports on Gareth Bale’s health are accurate. Bale suffered a right ankle tendon injury in November and had to leave last month’s Clasico against Barcelona after tweaking his calf.

Despite all the hype - I don't expect this match to be an open affair. Juventus strangled the life out of Barcelona's much vaunted tri-attack of Messi - Neymar and Suarez in nthe quarter-finals, winning 3-0 in Turin and then coasting to a 0-0 draw in Barcelona.

So I would not be surprised if this match was 0-0 at 90 minutes.

NBA Finals - Golden State Warriors clear favourites for redemption.

This is the moment the Golden State Warriors have been waiting for all season.

After blowing that 3-1 lead to the Cleveland Cavaliers in last year’s NBA Finals, the Warriors are back, and they’re better than ever; Golden State has opened as a 7-point home favorite for Thursday’s opener (9 PM ET, ABC), and the Warriors are –240 favorites on the NBA championship futures market.

Last year’s Warriors won 73 regular season games, but they didn’t win the only game that counts: the last one. So they strengthened by adding Kevin Durant in free agency, giving them yet another league MVP to join Stephen Curry in the starting lineup.

Durant is +220 and Curry is +230 to be named Finals MVP at the end of this series.

Even though the Cavs are +200 underdogs to defend their title, Le Bron James is easily the best player on his team – James is also +220 to win MVP, which would be his fourth award.

Kyrie Irving is his closest MVP competition at +1000. James has played at an exceptionally high level in these playoffs, too, putting up 32-8-7 per game while hitting 42.1% of his 3-pointers.

But will James be enough firepower to stop the Warriors? ... We don't think so.

Football divers beware - English football cameras are watching.

Players who dive in English football will face bans from next season under new Football Association regulations.
Under the new rules, passed by the governing body at its annual general meeting on Thursday, a panel will review footage each Monday looking for cases of simulation.
Any player unanimously found guilty of diving would be given a suspension.

Pools Punts - looking for an upset or two.

WE have two more pools tickets (Pick5 1x2)  for the weekend  - the theory this time seems to be to keep the options open and look for an upset.

You can read Auls's writeup on the main site in our Pools Betting page - and if you want to bet on them you find them at ColossusBets under the GoonersGuideAuls label.

I like this idea of riding the upset - and I'm in both of the pools as well - I suspect the tickets will pay off at 4x-8x investment if they land - and that's a pretty good return.

Good luck with your punts this weekend.

Arsenal beat Man United but where is the quality?

Arsenal kept their slim hopes of a top four finish alive with a 2-0 victory over Manchester United at the Emirates on Sunday - in a match between two troubled clubs.

Arsenal are in dire risk of ending their consecutive 20-year participation in the Champions League, while Manchester United who had never finished outside the top three with Alex Ferguson in charge, look likely to miss out on a top 3 spot for the fourth consecutive season under three different managers.

Arsenal's slow decline under Arsene Wenger has been well documented, especially this season, but they do look a little brighter with this 3-4-3 system and both Aaron Ramsey and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain thought they'd opened the scoring in the first half but United keeper David De Gea showed his top quality with fine saves.

Granit Xhaka with a deflected shot and Danny Welbeck with a fine header scored in a three-minute spell midway through the second half to end United's 25-game unbeaten Premier League run, but this was a game between two sides that are only a shadow of their former selves.

For Arsenal it was a welcomed win against a headline opponent to keep a top four chase alive, while for Manchester United, it was a spotty performance from a pretty average line-up that was only 2-3 players short of full strength.

ManYoo manager Jose Mourinho had clearly decided that finishing in the top four of the Premier League was beyond his side prior to kickoff resting Paul Pogba and Daley Blind, and seemingly preferring to focus on the upcoming Europa League semi-final (and hopefully final) as the easiest path back to the Champions League.

Both clubs are clearly some way below their best, and have limited depth in the squad so have significant rebuilding to do - it will be interesting to see how each manager approaches the task during the off-season.

Niko nabs a 6-fold return in the ColossusBets Pools

Congratulations to follows of Niko's Pool picks as his PICK 5 RESULTS syndicate completed the final matches on Saturday afternoon and returned a good dividend to holders.

Niko tipped winners in Italy, Spain, Scotland and England on the way to sharing the £5,000 pool with around 50 other tickets - meaning a 6-fold return to investors in the syndicate.

Enjoy the beers!

Another Pools Bet at ColossusBet Pools - are you onboard?

It's Colossus Bets Pools time again and Auls has posted another Five result pool.

You can read Auls's writeup on his pool entry here as he covers each of the five games in some depth and explains why he has chosen his options.

The key to this ticket - and possible high value return - is that we are taking a calculated risk in the Osasuna v Deportivo La Coruna game - as we are going 1X and backing the bottom placed side to get something - and opposing public favourite Deportivo ...

So it's a ticket with some risk ... but if it collects then I expect a 10-20 fold return on investment ... and that's the beauty of this pool syndicate betting style.

Auls and I have taken 50% of the syndicate - but there is still plenty of action left - it's well worth £1 or £2 of anyone's lazy money.

You can get on it by searching for "GoonersGuideAuls" at the Colossus Bets site

Good luck with your other sports betting punts on Saturday !

Football betting for profit - how stats can help you win more money.

As the football season enters it's final month it's the time of year when many punters start examining their profits and losses - and working out how to get better returns.

Here is a very surprising stat for you to consider. Home wins are up in the German Bundesliga this season from an average of 47% over the last 16 seasons to 51% this season with an overall record of 138-60-72 so far !

That is a variation of 4% from the average - or put another way there are 10% more home wins during 2016/17 than usual ... but I suspect that you are still not impressed - am I right ?

Well - what about if I tell you that if you had simply placed a bet on the home win on all 270 German Bundesliga games so far this season then you would 53.4 units ahead if you'd taken the best price which is a whopping +20% yield!!

Yes - I thought that would get your attention !

(Note : We have been taking prices from Bet365, BetVictor, Interwetten, Ladbrokes and PaddyPower for these price stats - all solid and reliable bookmakers).

How has this happened  - how can such a simple "system" be profitable and is it a one-season fluke?

Well, betting on all home wins would have been profitable in 8 of the last 9 seasons, for a total of nearly 143 units of profit overall - but last season saw a low of just 44% of home wins so the was only a small profit of 1.3 units and it seemed to put punters off betting on home wins.

So the bookmakers responded by putting prices on home wins up, and they have created a window of opportunity for the savvy punter to make good profits. There will probably be an adjustment at the end of the season as bookmakers check their own profits and losses.

It always pays to check out the stats to find weak markets.

Congratulations to Newcastle United - back in the Premier League.

Newcastle United secured an immediate return to the Premier League with a convincing home victory over Preston.
Christian Atsu put the Magpies 2-1 up at half-time after Jordan Hugill had cancelled out an Ayoze Perez opener.
On a tense evening at St James' Park, Newcastle nerves were settled when Preston's Paul Gallagher was sent off for handling on the line and Matt Ritchie scored the resulting penalty.
Perez got his second from close range to promote Newcastle up to the Premier League enxt season along with Brighton who top the table.

Sunday Pools Success - a 600% return.

Sunday was a much better day for football punting - and not JUST because Arsenal beat Manchester City 2-1 after extra-time to reach the FA Cup final ....

We had two pools tickets at Colossus Bets come good - the best of which was a five match 1X2 pool entry, where we have come through four games and received a cashout offer for over £200 - a good result for our initial £36 outlay.

The potential winnings if Newcastle United can beat Preston North End on Monday night is £340 - so we will NOT cashout and will let the bet ride - although we may do a bit of hedging at the bookmakers with an X2 wager to lock in a profit.

As you can see above - this ticket had plenty of safety options - and there were only two options that needed to be avoided in order to get to this cash stage - which is a 6 fold return on investment.

Of course not every pool does this well - it needs an upset or two to knock out other pools entries and as you can see above the Arsenal v Man City draw eliminated 3/4 of tickets, and then Crystal Palace's win at Liverpool knocked out 6/7 of the remaining tickets.

However, this ticket is a GREAT example of the potential value that we see in pools betting at Colossus Bets, where a carefully thought out strategy can provide a good payout.

You can follow our pools tickets options at our Colossus Bets Pools Section on the main site.
Good luck with YOUR punts this week.

UPDATE : The bet won - and returned the syndicate £340 for a stake of  £36 - congratulations to any and all readers who joined in.

Saturday has plenty of profits, but we are dumped out of the pools

Our excursion into the Colossus Bets pools was a short one this week with two entries out after Saturday's games.

However, on the positive side our tipsters did put together a 12-5 winning record on European football tips on Saturday, with Niko going 4-1 in German Bundesliga betting, and Auls also recording a 4-1 record in English football betting tips as well, so there should be plenty of profits for readers.

Don't forget to check out Sunday's tips on the GoonersGuide to Gambling main page.

Saturday is the day for Profits

There was a big list of games on the GoonersGuide.com website this weekend with 42 sports betting previews and so far Saturday has proved to be a very profitable day with a 21-8 record.

Auls and Cruiser led the charge in the English premier League with both tipsters running up 6-1 winning records and big profits.

Niko was also in profits in the German Bundesliga, taking both Mainz and Hoffenheim at good prices for the home win on the way to a 5-3 record in German football.

In Australia, Stu bagged two winners in the NRL Rugby League, while DownUnder successfully tipped Sydney FC to win to nil in the Aussie A-League,

I hope that those tips helped you to a profitable Saturday too!

Is Bitcoin (BTC) betting the future for European punters?

Things change - that's true of everything in life - and in the online gambling area it's particularly true as various governments attempt to restrict and regulate sports betting usually with a view to increasing their local tax take with domestic licensing.

Back in 1999 when I started the GoonersGuide.com website as a weekly one page blog, it was pretty easy to find a good place to bet online, and there were very few restrictions in place.

Finding good quality betting locations was easy, and we have just a handful of the top bookmaker sites like Bookmaker.com, Bet365, Ladbrokes, Pinnacle and Interwetten. There are five quality sites that gave you a line on any sporting event you wanted. Simple.

But then in April 2011, the United States passed the UIGEA (claiming that Internet gambling was covered and prohibited by a law from the 1950's covering wire fraud) and almost overnight the market started to fragment.

Many sites dropped American players immediately, while other sites like Bodog took a geo-targeted licensing approach and spun off multiple bookmakers, with Bovada to service US places, Bodog would only accept Canadian players and Bodog88 targetted Asia.

Unfortunately, for European punters, the appetite for tax grabs spread to Europe as well and today nearly EVERY major country in Europe has some sort of restriction, regulation, or outright banning of internet operations that are not locally licensed.

And that's proved to be a real pain in the wallet for punters, as local markets with protected bookmakers who have high taxes to pay have typically dropped their odds across the board as they've been able to target a captive audience.

Of course there are ways and means to get around these restrictions, and most internet savvy people are already using VPNs or other methods to avoid geo-blocking rules when looking to stream online movies and sport anyway.

But the one issue outstanding has always been the MONEY. Online gambling requires funds, and with many governments ordering banks to prevent punters from using credit cards it became difficult for many Europeans to fund betting accounts (and withdraw profits).

However, a solution is emerging that was designed specifically to avoid any restrictions of trade - it is of course the online blockchain tokens, and Bitcoin in particular that has arrived. With a Bitcoin account you can deposit and withdraw from any organisation (including betting sites) with no bank inference of restriction.

For those new to Bitcoin, it can be daunting to learn the processes involved in opening a bitcoin wallet, and moving bitcoins about but - like all things online - there are plenty of places where you can research this and slowly learn. For me it took about a week to get the basics sorted out ... and six months later it's as simple as using any other online wallet.

If YOU are living in a country with restrictions, like the United States, Canada, Spain, Italy, France, Greece, Turkey, Poland, Czech Republic, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands, or Australia then it would certainly pay for  you to do some research on bitcoin, and how it works.

Once you are comfortable with holding bitcoin, and using bitcoin, then check out our Using BitCoin To Gamble page to find a good, solid and reputable place to make a deposit.

The gambling landscape is changing, and punters need to change with it - unless you want to gamble with second rate organisations with low lines / odds and poor returns?

Don't Join A UK Bookmaker Tomorrow.

Just a heads up to let you know that if you are planning to join up to a UK bookmaker on Saturday 8th April 2017 ... then DON'T DO IT !! (*)

That's because the Grand National Race is on Saturday afternoon - which means that the bookies will be overrun with bets on the race and new people trying to join up to place a bet - and as a consequence most bookmakers have DROPPED THEIR BONUSES for the day.

The bookies think that it's easy pickings tomorrow and so most of them have removed all of their freebies and matched deposit bonuses. That includes BetVictor, BetFred, BoyleSports, Coral, Ladbrokes, SkyBet and Totesport.

(*) Ok - there is one bookmaker who is being fair - the exception appears to be the guys at bet365 who are still offering their join bonus ... Visit bet365 here

But just be warned that they WILL be very busy on site - so if you are planning on making bets on Saturday - then get them down early to avoid hassle.

Good luck!

So let's kick this back into life ...

About 18 months ago I posted a blog post asking for ANY human readers to react by hitting the FUNNY reaction to the post - to prove that they were not a bot. My theory was that less than 5% of blog traffic was actually a real person.

The result? Despite a couple of hundred hits a week - over the last 18 months - not one person has actually marked the post a funny - not one? WTF?!! I guess that means that what I was writing was not interesting enough to pull in one living betting punter - which is a pretty sad state of affairs.

So I simply stopped posting ... for about 18 months.

I'm going to kickstart it back into action - posting 3-4 timers a week on all things sporting (and sometimes betting) as see if we can get some interaction will fellow sports fans out there.

Are you out there? Anyone? Hit  the funny reaction if you are ...
